Ideal Thermostat Settings for Every Season

St. Michael AirRecommended Thermostat Settings For Home Comfort

Staying within the guidelines of a monthly budget is challenging enough as it is without having to add the strain of the air-conditioner to it.

The strain being referred to here is the adjustments for outside temperatures. One of the greatest drains on that utility bill is when the residents constantly fight about where the temperature should be set.

Naturally those settings will vary based on the current season. It is important to remember that temperatures react differently as in heat will rise.

If the residents consider installing ceiling fans to assist with the circulation, it might not be such a bad idea either.

Bundle Up

The first thing to think about as you consider ideal temperatures will be that if your thermostat is not functioning as it should it won't matter. According to tests carried out by the US department of energy the Ideal temperatures for winter when the residents are awake will be sixty-eight degrees.

This temperature allows for residents to move about the home without the need to bundle up and without dipping too heavily into their energy resources. When everyone is asleep or out and about that temperature can be reduced by ten degrees. These settings will work best with a programmable thermostat.

As Hot As It Gets

Things change considerably in the summer and not necessarily because it gets hotter either. Even if you are lucky enough to reside in an area with low humidity you will still need to adjust the thermostat accordingly. The average person would have no problem with a temperature of seventy-five degrees, however, there are exceptions to that rule.

If you were to go by energy star recommendations the thermostat should be set to seventy-eight degrees. You can adjust your programmable thermostat by seven to ten degrees during the night or when nobody is home.

Adjusting your thermostat to change at specific times of the day or night based on your work and social habits is simple enough.

But what happens when you pack the family station wagon and head for the mountains? If the house is vacant you should increase the standard daytime setting by at least five degrees.

This increase would be in the summer time. If it is winter you should consider making those adjustments in the opposite direction.

It should be noted that comfort is relevant to the individuals within the home, however, to obtain the maximum benefit on savings the above settings are recommended.
