A few of our favorite do’s and don’t when it comes to organizing your home and getting it ready for fall:

DO: Wash & insulate your windows.

Have your windows seen some abuse over the summer? Then make them sparkle and shine by washing them inside and out.

Once they are clean and streak-free, insulate them by adding heavy-duty clear plastic to the inside of your windows. Make sure that they are tightly sealed to prevent cool air from infiltrating your home.

DON’T: Overbook Yourself

microfiber-on-your-windows_720Setting aside an entire day to clean and insulate every window may seem like a great idea, but often life gets in the way, and you canโ€™t get to everything on your to-do list.

That’s totally normal, but many homeowners find it discouraging. Instead, spread out your to-do’s over several days or evenings.

DO: Vacuum Your Rugs

Vacuuming your rugs is one of the most effective ways to eliminate dust, dander, bacteria, and other irritants which get thrown into the air every time someone steps on it. Not only does vacuuming your rugs help eliminate the presence of dust and other items in your air, but it can also help you get sick less often, help keep your rug from “shedding”, and help keep your rug from wearing out.

DON’T: Vacuum at Full Force

It may be tempting to use your vacuum attachments to go all-out on your rug, but vacuuming with a brush or beater bar can actually pull out rug fibers and make it shed even more. Instead, use a low-pressure setting without any brushes to keep your rug clean and plush.

DO: Evaluate any wooden floors.

Do any of your floors need refinishing after a summer’s worth of abuse? Then fall is the perfect time to think about refinishing or re-staining them. Sweeping, vacuuming, and general day-to-day care can also go a long way towards extending the lifetime of your flooring.

DON’T: Try it at Home Without Doing Your Research

Different kinds of hardwood floors react differently to various treatment and refinishing methods, so do your research to determine the best ways to maintain your flooring.

DO: Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

smoke-alarm-checkTesting your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors is a pivotal part of staying safe at home.

You should perform regular checks of all of your detectors throughout your home to ensure that their batteries are fully charged, and that they are working properly so that they can alert you to an emergency.

DON’T: Forget This Step

Ensuring that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly can mean life or death, so never skip this critical step.
