Garbage Disposal Odor Issues

St. Michael PlumberMy Disposer Smells Really Bad, What Can a Plumber do to Get Rid of it?

Most people find garbage disposals a very quick and effective way to dispose of unwanted food, and rightfully so. Leftovers left hidden in the corners of your fridge for days and even weeks at a time can provide for an untimely smell and odor.

So when its time to get rid of yesterdays bon appetite, having a garbage disposal definitely comes in handy.
But what do you do when that odor that was once coming from your leftovers is now coming unrelentingly from your garbage disposal? You've tried bleach and all kinds of cleaning solutions, but the smell just will not go away.

When you've realized that you have tried every solution to eliminate the foul odor coming from your garbage disposal, then its time to call the plumber fast.

Plumbers to the Rescue!

Most odors coming from garbage disposals can be eliminated rather quickly. But when that foul smelling odor just will not go away, that is when the plumber comes in handy to really get in there and find the source of odor. There are several options that a plumber may try to corral the odor. This includes:

  • For really stubborn odors, using a safe cleaning product like Borax is the primary choice. He'll pour a good amount of Borax down the drain and let it sit for an hour. After an hour or so he'll then turn on the hot water and flush the borax away. And hopefully that foul odor in the process.
  • For stubborn odors, he may also pour baking soda into the drain and let it set for several hours before running the water and garbage disposal.
  • He also may freeze vinegar in ice cube trays and run the frozen vinegar cubes down the disposal. This will also keep your blades sharp while safely and effectively killing odor-causing bacteria.
  • Or he may just keep it natural depending on the severity or situation and take a lemon or orange and toss it into the disposal. The oils and juice from the fruits and Garbage Disposalpeels naturally clean the walls inside the garbage disposal and creates a fresh scent.

Don't do it!

Here are few items plumbers say not to throw into your disposal:

  • grease, oil or fat
  • cigarette butts
  • glass, plastic, metal or even paper.
